Anti-tumor effect of Astragali radix water-extracted solution

Abstract

|
Astragali radix water-extracted solution (ARWS) was prepared and tested for potential antitumor activity. It was shown to possess considerable toxicity toward various tumor cell lines. Concentration of ARWS at 4 and 8 ㎎/㎖ resulted in more than 40% inhibition of growth in mouse Ehrlich ascites tumor cells(EATC) and human A549 cells. Toxicity of ARWS to HeLa cells revealed that 51% inhibition of growth at concentration of 8 ㎎/㎖. Mice given only Ehrlich cells survived an average of 0% after 20 days, but mice given Ehrlich cells and 2 and 4 ㎎/㎖ ARWS had 40% and 63% survival, respectively. Administration of ARWS inhibited the growth of Ehrlich ascites cells in vivo.
